SurfKoat Deco Guard

SILOXANE MODIFIED PURE ACRYLIC CONCRETE SEALER

Deco-Guard is a cutting-edge hybrid technology sealer combining the decorative and protective qualities of a pure MMA acrylic with the extreme water and salt protection of a reactive penetrating sealer. Deco-Guard is specially designed for stamped and decorative concrete and offers superior resistance to water penetration, de-icing salts, salt water pool systems, snow and ice.

Deco-Guard is available in three unique versions to allow you to choose the specific qualities that are right for your specific project.

Deco-Guard is a solvent based, siloxane-modified, 15% solids sealer. Deco-Guard offers deep penetration and a rich Wet Look with a low-medium gloss finish.

Deco-Guard Plus is a solvent based, siloxane-modified, 25% solids sealer. Deco-Guard Plus offers a thicker coating with a rich Wet Look and a medium-high gloss finish.

Deco-Guard WB is a water based, siloxane-modified, 15% solids sealer. Deco-Guard WB offers a water based option with more natural appearance and a satin gloss finish.

All three versions of Deco-Guard are fully UV stable, which means they will never yellow from UV exposure like cheap styrene-acrylics. Although we always recommend sealers only be applied to concrete that is fully cured (28+ days), Deco-Guard does meet ASTM specifications for a cure and seal, and with proper application under proper conditions may be applied to freshly placed concrete. Deco-Guard is one of our most user-friendly, longest lasting and easy to apply acrylics. It offers easy application by roller or sprayer.

Deco-Guard

Deco-Guard is a new dual technology sealer combining the decorative and protective qualities of a pure methyl methacrylate acrylic with the extreme water and salt protection of a reactive siloxane water-repellent reactive sealer.

Both Solvent-Based versions are considered "low VOC" to accommodate VOC laws in all states except Southern California.

Like most "low VOC" solvent-based products, Deco-Guard and Deco-Guard Plus typically dry faster than traditional higher VOC acrylics. for this reason we recommend special care be taken to avoid application in hot temperatures or direct sunlight.

The Water-Based version is legal for sale in all areas of the U.S. including Southern California.

Both Solvent-Based versions are compatible with many other similar solvent-based acrylics that may already exist on previously sealed concrete. Solvent-based acrylics should never be applied over any existing water-based sealer. If your concrete has an existing water-based sealer, it must be removed before applying Deco-Guard or Deco-Guard Plus. In some cases Deco-Guard WB may be used over other water-based acrylics as a re-seal, but that process isn't necessarily recommended. If you have an existing water-based sealer or a "Mystery Sealer", you may also consider other products like Seal-n-Lock SuperWet, which can be applied over many compatible water-based sealers as well as most solvent-based sealers.

Cleaning and Preparation Instructions

1. Completely remove all oils and contaminates from the surface. All previous sealers or coatings must be removed before application unless they are a compatible solvent-based acrylic. Use only cleaning methods suitable for the substrate you are cleaning. Clean oily concrete with our Concrete Degreaser. Use a bristle brush for heavily oiled spots. Area to be treated must be clean, porous and sound.

2. Use only the amount of cleaners necessary to remove contaminates, oils, fluids and sealers from the substrate. If using acidic cleaners to etch surface or to remove efflorescence, calcium, rust, etc, be sure to neutralize and restore pH with Balance Neutralizer. Rinse thoroughly! Surface and pores must be clean, dry and free of all chemicals before applying Deco-Guard.

3. If using over cured trowel finished concrete, diamond grinding is always recommended to open the surface and allow adhesion of the sealer. Do not grind finer than 100 grit. Beyond 100 grit, sealer adhesion will be compromised. Dry grinding is highly recommended to avoid introduction of moisture into the concrete. If diamond grinding is not possible, first etch with Surf-Prep.

4. Allow area to dry completely.

Application Instructions

Always test in an inconspicuous area before use to ensure compatibility and desired results!

Deco-Guard may be applied using a roller or industrial concrete sprayer. Use a long nap roller for exposed aggregate, a medium nap roller for textured surfaces and a short nap roller for smooth surfaces. If spraying, the solvent-based versions should only be sprayed using an acetone resistant sprayer such as our Swissmex Acetone Sprayer or Chapin Xtreme Sprayer. Do not allow to Puddle! Thick or puddled areas may prevent the solvent from evaporating and may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which may cause milky white spots. Applying too thin may cause sealer to prematurely delaminate, flake or wear away. Allow sealer to dry for 24 hours for light traffic and at least 48 hours for heavy traffic. If applying two coats, wait approximately 4 – 6 hours between coats. Do not thin product.

Make sure all sprinklers are turned off for a 24 hour period of time. Apply Deco-Guard only if rain is not expected for at least 24 hours. Do not apply Deco-Guard if surface temperature is below 40° F., or above 80° F. If possible always apply as concrete is cooling, rather than as concrete is warming. Warming by the sun causes the air inside the concrete to expand and push out through the surface, often causing bubbles in the still wet sealer.

SLIP RESISTANCE: Surface Grip may be used in Deco-Guard Plus for additional slip resistance or added texture. Adding Surface Grip is a great way to reduce slip and falls, reduce gloss/reflection and also hide minor imperfections in the concrete. Follow mixing instructions and do not overload system. When using a non-skid additive in acrylics, do not add to first coat. Add it to second coat. The addition of an anti-skid additive will make spraying difficult, so soll-on application is typically recommended when using Surface Grip. All non-skid additives may shorten the life of the film to some degree.

CLEAN UP (SOLVENT-BASED VERSIONS): Clean up tools with A1 Solvent or Xylene.

CLEAN UP (WATER-BASED VERSION): Clean up tools with warm soapy water.

Of course, having the right tools will make your job easier, so scroll to the bottom to see our recommended Sprayers, Rollers and Application Tools!

Coverage Rates: Coverage rates are approximate and will vary depending on substrate density, porosity and temperature. In most cases, two thin coats are recommended. Coverage rates based on total combined two coat application.

Stamped concrete: 200-250 sq. ft. / gallon
Exposed Aggregate: 100 sq. ft. / gallon
Broom swept concrete: 150-200 sq. ft. / gallon
Troweled concrete: 200-250 sq. ft. / gallon

PLEASE NOTE: When using as a cure & seal, apply only one coat to meet specifications. Extreme bubbling and/or hazing may occur due to lack of permeability.

Maintenance

Like all things, maintaining optimal protection of a sealed surface requires scheduled maintenance. Once properly applied, surfaces sealed with Deco-Guard may periodically require a light cleaning to remove dirt, dust, mud, etc. In most cases, low pressure water is all that is needed for routine cleaning. Do not use a hot-water pressure washer unless you are preparing to apply a maintenance coat of Deco-Guard. Re-seal surface every two years or as needed to prevent buildup of sealer.
