Sealing Natural Stone

Natural Stone Sealing

Natural stone construction is usually strong and durable.

Unfortunately, the mortar that holds it together is not.
The mortar is very porous, and will readily soak up water.
This moisture can freeze and expand causing
the mortar to crack or crumble.
Our quality Stone Sealers & Sealants can protect both
your stone and mortar from water penetration.

Sealing Faux Stone

Manufactured or Cultured Stone Sealing

Cultured stone is nothing more than colored concrete
in the shape of a stone. This concrete is just as
porous as the mortar around it.

Since manufactured stone is actually "glued" to
the wall with mortar, it can literally break off
due to expanding moisture!

How to Seal Natural Stone

Natural stone comes in many different shapes, colors and forms. Limestone, flagstone, travertine, bluestone, slate and granite are some common examples of natural stone. Although many are strong and durable, they are also very porous. If left unprotected, stone will readily soak up water, stains and other contaminates. A stone sealer will protect your stone from stains, cracking and erosion.

Cleaning Flagstone
  • Natural Stone Cleaning and Preparation

    - As with all projects, proper preparation is the MOST important step! Before a protective treatment can be applied, any non-compatible old sealers MUST be removed and the surface completely cleaned and de-greased to ensure adhesion and penetration. For grouted horizontal natural stone such as patios etc. we highly recommend mechanically prepping the stone with a floor machine and an abrasive Mal-Grit brush. This wet scrubbing will smooth, clean and remove a very thin layer of the stone surface, revealing the beautiful true colors of your stone previously hidden by embedded slurry, dirt and contaminates. Do not acid wash!

  • Penetrating Stone Sealers

    - This is the sealer we recommend for most stone and masonry applications. This type of stone sealer penetrates deep into the surface, sealing out water and contaminates. Penetrating stone sealers do not form a film or change the look of the surface. These are very popular for sidewalk sealing, pool decks and exterior stone waterproofing since they do not become slippery when wet. These are very effective, long lasting and offer easy maintenance. This sealer only needs maintenance about every 5 years.

  • Permanent Stone Sealer + Penetrating Stone Sealer

    - This is the ultimate system for protecting and strengthening your natural stone. The permanent sealer penetrates deep into the stone and mortar, chemically fusing to the substrate, sealing out water, oil, salt and other contaminates. It will also strengthen and consolidate cracked or crumbling mortar, stopping further damage. The penetrating sealer described above, is then applied as the second step to complete the process and further protect against water and stains.

How to Seal Faux Stone

Manufactured or Cultured Stone is simply colored concrete that has been molded and cast in the shape of a stone. Manufactured stone is very popular in construction due to it's relatively easy installation and realistic appearance. Cultured stone has a very thin layer of coloring on it's face side. This is what gives it the look of stone. It is extremely important to protect your manufactured stone. If this layer is damaged or wears off, you are left with nothing but bare concrete. Cultured stone is also very porous and will easily allow water to penetrate into the walls of your home. Once this happens, the moisture becomes trapped and dangerous mold can form. This type of stone is manufactured by hundreds of different companies and in countless shapes and color combinations. Due to the many combinations of admixtures and coloring pigments used in manufacturing cultured stone, it is always recommended that you test any sealer you intend to use on a small area to ensure compatibility.
