1040 Epoxy is 40% solids clear epoxy coating, perfect for all types of residential, commercial and industrial concrete floors. It's two-component, water-based formula offers excellent performance with easy application and very low odor. Superior bond strength and excellent durability makes 1040 the perfect universal primer for most epoxies, urethanes, polyureas and polyaspartics, as well as an equally outstanding stand-alone coating. Like most water-based finishes, 1040 Epoxy offers excellent durability and chemical resistance, while leaving a very natural appearance. 1040 Epoxy does not darken or enhance the color of the underlying concrete. This makes 1040 Epoxy a great sealer choice for spaces needing superior protection but wanting to retain the natural color of the concrete surface. 1040 Epoxy is our #1 choice for designers working on contemporary spaces like lofts and industrial conversions.

1040 Epoxy has a high gloss finish, but due to it's deep penetration, often looks more satin or semi-gloss if applied thin.

1040 WB Epoxy

If you’re looking for a “tough-as-nails” floor sealer that won’t darken the color of the concrete, stain or dye… You’ve found the right product.

We know there are a lot of “easy to use”, single-component, water-based acrylics out there that will initially give you the same look, but DON’T BE FOOLED! It’s what you can’t see that makes the difference… a single-component acrylic can’t begin to match the durability, chemical resistance and ESPECIALLY the bond strength of a 2k epoxy like 1040.

That’s also why 1040 has long been our go-to recommendation for a priming concrete floors, especially for solid-color installations.

 

1040 Epoxy can also be used alongside the other members of the PolyRez WB family to dial in the exact look and sheen you want. Here are a couple "recipies" for success...

For your first coat over dyed, stained or just plain bare concrete, choose between:
- for an enhanced "wet look" to make the color "pop"
- 1040-WB Epoxy for a natural appearance with minimal color enhancement

For your final topcoat, choose between:
- 6000-WB Urethane for a gloss finish
- for a matte Finish

If a solid color application is desired, we always recommend tinted 1040 WB Epoxy be applied first as the colored base coat. 6000-Gloss Urethane or 6100-Matte Urethane (depending on desired sheen) can then be used as a final clear protective topcoat.

 

1040 Epoxy can be used clear, or tinted with color from our AquaPack Color System.

 

Color Tint For EpoxyAquaPack Color System:

Color can be added to 1040 Epoxy to create beautiful solid color epoxy floors. AquaPack Color is available in 6 neutral colors to fit any situation. Colors can also be mixed to create endless combinations. Color (usually black) is also recommended if used for the primer coat of metallic floor installations for optimum color effects. Simply add less pigment to achieve a more translucent color or use up to 16oz / gallon for a solid opaque color.

 

Cleaning and Preparation Instructions

1. Interior Floors MUST be profiled prior to installation. Dry grinding is highly recommended to avoid introduction of moisture into the concrete. Required profile will depend on application.

For use as a clear or tinted sealer: Diamond grind floors to between 50 - 100 grit. Be sure to remove all swirl marks, but do not grind finer than 100 grit. Beyond 100 grit, topcoat adhesion will be compromised.

For use as a primer or base coat for flake or quartz systems: These systems are designed to be installed thick and require maximum adhesion. Shot blast or diamond grind floors with 30 grit or coarser diamonds to achieve a CSP-2 to CSP-3 profile.

2. For best appearance and durability of solid color, flake and quartz installations, first repair all cracks using our crack filler. See separate application instructions for RapidSet.

3. If applying to an existing fully cured and fully adhered coating, the surface must be cleaned and thoroughly sanded with 80 - 120 grit sandpaper.

4. Remove any latent dust from concrete surface by auto scrubber or vacuum system. Do not use any chemicals. Surface must be clean, dry and porous before application of 1040 Epoxy!

5. Allow area to dry completely.

6. Protect all areas not to be coated. Mask off all adjacent surfaces. Before opening or handling 1040 Epoxy, first put on proper protective equipment including eye protection and rubber gloves.

 

Moisture Testing - Before application of any concrete floor coating, always perform a simple moisture vapor test by taping an 18 inch x 18 inch plastic sheet onto a section of floor. Remove plastic after 24 hours. If floor or plastic is wet, DO NOT PROCEED. First determine if moisture is remaining from the cleaning process, or if it is a more serious issue coming from the soil below the slab. More advanced moisture testing kits should be used on floors with suspected moisture problems. If needed, allow floor additional time to dry from the cleaning process. In winter months or in basements, this could take anywhere from 24 hours to a month or more. If you suspect a moisture issue from beneath the slab, DO NOT PROCEED. Whatever you do, don't take a chance on trapping moisture in the slab. Moisture trapped below the coating will cause the sealer to fail, resulting in a costly disaster for you. When moisture testing confirms the slab is dry, ONLY THEN are you ready to seal the concrete.

 

Mixing Instructions

Proper mixing is critical to application success.

Mix ratio for 1040 WB Epoxy is 1(PartA) : 1(PartB)

1. Before mixing, you will first need to determine the approximate amount of product you will need to mix to complete the portion of your project you have planned. Do not mix more than you can apply in a 25-30 minute window. During application, if 1040 Epoxy starts to get thick or begins to harden, the remainder should be discarded and a new batch mixed. Do not add freshly mixed product to container already containing product near the end of it's pot life.

2. For tinted or solid color applications, first mix desired amount of with pre-measured amount of 1040 Epoxy PartA and mix thoroughly using a low speed drill mixer. For most solid color applications, the average usage is 16 ounces of AquaPack Color per 1 gallon of finished coating. (each quart tints a 2 gallon kit) This means: To make approximately one gallon of colored 1040 Epoxy, mix 16 oz. of color with 1 gallon of PartA (which will then be mixed with 1 gallon of PartB to complete the volume) For lighter colors it may take more and darker colors may take less depending on the application. If desired, simply add less pigment to achieve a more translucent color. Do not add too much color! Over pigmenting may cause color float or streaking. Especially in the darker colors! Do not allow product to puddle during application!!

3. Pour appropriate amounts of Part A and Part B into a clean, dry mixing container. Mix contents thoroughly with low speed drill mixer. Avoid whipping air into the coating. Improper or incomplete mixing may result in product failure.

3. Product is now ready to apply!

 

Maximum expected workable pot life after mixing Part A and Part B is approximately 1 hour at a common temperature range of 70 F - 80 F at 50% relative humidity. Please note that higher temperatures will shorten pot life, as colder temperatures will extend the coatings pot life.

 

Specific Applications

Before application, always test product in an inconspicuous area to ensure appearance and compatibility are acceptable. Concrete should be fully cured for 28 days before applying 1040 Epoxy.

 

Primer Application Instructions:
1. Apply the mixed material to surface with a T-Bar applicator or within the usable pot life time frame, as well as the recommended temperature and relative humidity guidelines. If out-gassing in the concrete causes bubbles, re-roll the material using a cross rolling method before the material cures to reduce or eliminate air entrapment. If the material becomes thick while applying and begins sticking to the roller, stop applying and discard the mixed material. At this point it has reached the end of the usable pot life. While applying, keep a wet edge to prevent roller marks. It is recommended to work in sections usually using control joints as dividers to ensure proper application results. Do not allow to Puddle! Remove any excess material in joints or low impressioned areas. Puddled areas may not cure adequately and may cause blush or a white haze.

2. Allow product to cure for a minimum of 4-6 hours.

3. Apply compatible top-coat within 24 hours. If recoating after 24 hours a light sanding using a fine sanding screen will be needed to ensure adequate adhesion.

 

Coverage Rates:

Single Primer Coat = 200-250 sq. ft. / gallon (may vary depending on porosity of concrete) This means a 2gallon kit should be approximately enough product to prime 400-500 sq. ft. of floor.

 

Solid Color Epoxy Floor Application Instructions:

1040 Epoxy is an excellent choice for easy to install, high-performance epoxy floors. Typically this system is installed in either a two or three coat process, with the final coat being a protective clear coat of 1040 Epoxy or one of our even more chemical and scratch resistant urethanes.

1. Apply the mixed material to surface with a T-Bar applicator or within the usable pot life time frame, as well as the recommended temperature and relative humidity guidelines. If out-gassing in the concrete causes bubbles, re-roll the material using a cross rolling method before the material cures to reduce or eliminate air entrapment. If the material becomes thick while applying and begins sticking to the roller, stop applying and discard the mixed material. At this point it has reached the end of the usable pot life. While applying, keep a wet edge to prevent roller marks. It is recommended to work in sections usually using control joints as dividers to ensure proper application results. Do not allow to Puddle! Remove any excess material in joints or low impressioned areas. Puddled areas may not cure adequately and may cause blush or a white haze.

2. Allow product to cure for a minimum of 4-6 hours.

3. If needed for complete color coverage, apply second coat of 1040 Epoxy with color in same manner as the first coat. Do not allow first coat to cure for more than 24 hours. If recoating after 24 hours a light sanding using a fine sanding screen will be needed to ensure adequate adhesion.

4. Apply final clear coat of 1040 Epoxy or compatible urethane top-coat. Do not allow previous coat to cure for more than 24 hours. If recoating after 24 hours a light sanding using a fine sanding screen will be needed to ensure adequate adhesion.

5. Allow surface to dry for a minimum of 6 hours before foot traffic and 48 hours before heavier traffic. Product achieves full strength and chemical resistance in 5 days.

 

Coverage Rates:

Primer Coat = 200-250 sq. ft. / gallon (may vary depending on porosity of concrete)
Second Coat = 250-300 sq. ft. / gallon
Total Project Estimate Rate = approximately 100-150 sq. ft. / gallon... This means a 2gallon kit should be approximately enough product to complete 200-300 sq. ft. of floor. This is based on a two coat application.

 

 

Stand-Alone Clear Sealer Application Instructions:

1040 Epoxy is also a great, high-performance, stand-alone coating. It can be applied in a single coat application as described above, or in a two coat application for additional gloss and protection.

1. Apply the mixed material to surface with a T-Bar applicator or within the usable pot life time frame, as well as the recommended temperature and relative humidity guidelines. If out-gassing in the concrete causes bubbles, re-roll the material using a cross rolling method before the material cures to reduce or eliminate air entrapment. If the material becomes thick while applying and begins sticking to the roller, stop applying and discard the mixed material. At this point it has reached the end of the usable pot life. While applying, keep a wet edge to prevent roller marks. It is recommended to work in sections usually using control joints as dividers to ensure proper application results. Do not allow to Puddle! Remove any excess material in joints or low impressioned areas. Puddled areas may not cure adequately and may cause blush or a white haze.

Maintenance

Once properly applied, surfaces sealed with 1040 Epoxy will require very little maintenance. The surface may periodically require a light cleaning to remove dirt, dust, mud, etc. In most cases, simple mopping or autoscrubbing is all that is needed for routine cleaning. may also be used for additional protection and slip-resistance as it meets requirements for ASTM D2047.
